If you are considering filing for bankruptcy chapter 7, let me give you a quick rundown on my experience and hopefully it will help you make better decisions in as you go through the process.
I am a firm believer in really checking out any professional I hire to do work for me. It makes not difference if it is to install a toilet, set a broken bone, or handle a legal issue. It's very important that whoever you hire is qualified and honest. Now, honesty is one of those subjective things and it means different things to different people depending on their motivation.

What I mean by this is that most people do the right thing most of the time and that applies to bankruptcy lawyers as well. But here is where the problem lies, some people are more easily corrupted than others, and if you happen to chose a lawyer who is easily corruptible, then you could find yourself in a little bit of a mess.
Let me tell you about an experience a friend of mine had with a lawyer in Austin Texas.
My friend did all his research and found a lawyer who was board certified and had all of the credentials to handle his bankruptcy so he gave him a call and they had a consultation, and he hired this lawyer to file his chapter 7 bankruptcy in Austin Texas.
Now this was a good guy who handled most of his clients in a professional and honest manner. But the thing my friend didn't know about him was that he was easily corruptible or that it was easy for him to do the wrong thing if the opportunity presented itself and the risk was low.
So to make a long story short, what happened was that my friend did not have all the money to pay the lawyers fees up front so he gave him what he had and then offered his fathers expensive watch for the lawyer to hold until the balance was paid off. Well unfortunately for my friend, when he called to pay off his bill and recover his watch, he was simply told that the lawyer was keeping the watch and there was nothing he could do about it.
Sure, my friend could have sued him, but suing a lawyer is never a good idea and it only ends up costing you more. So the moral of the story is, make sure you are dealing with a reputable lawyer and that you get everything in writing, especially when or if you put up a family heirloom as security for an unpaid debt. Don't ever assume the lawyer or anyone else will ever do the right thing.
